- W2012368586 abstract "The olfactory bulbs were removed from five young female pigs, four of the pigs were approximately 3 months old and one was 3 weeks old. The animals were allowed to reach maturity and were mated at about 14 months old. The matings, parturition, behaviour towards the piglets and the subsequent growth of the piglets was observed. One sow was mated twice and so a total of six litters was observed. Each week up until weaning, the reaction of the bulbectomised sows towards an introduced strange piglet was observed. Immediately prior to weaning, the reaction of the sows' towards an introduced strange entire litter (after removal of the sows' own litters) was noted. Similar introduction of strange piglets were made to five unoperated sows. All five bulbectomised sows exhibited oestrous cycles and were successfully mated although one sow fought with a boar for a brief period. Parturition was normal and subsequently all the piglets formed stable teat orders and grew at normal rates. At no stage did the sows show any sign of rejection of their litters. There was no aggression shown towards the introduced strange single piglets by the bulbectomised sows. In all cases the unoperated sows were aggressive towards the strange piglets at some time during the 10 min observation period. Similarly, the bulbectomised sows did not exhibit aggression toward the introduced strange litter whilst all five unoperated sows were aggressive towards the strangers at some time during a 30 min period." @default.
