- W2012482486 abstract "To develop a high performance dialysis membrane, we need to clarify the mechanism of fouling caused by plasma protein adhesion. Measurement of diffusive permeability kM and pure water permeability Lp of dialysis membranes before and after blood filtration together with the tortuous capillary pore diffusion model (TCPDM) allows evaluation of plugging and narrowing of pores. Filtration experiments with AM-BC-150X and APS-150E (Asahi Medical, Japan) for 4hr were performed using bovine blood (1L, Ht=40%, TP=6.5g/dl) at 310K, a blood flow rate of 200ml/min and a filtration rate of 15ml/min. Treated membranes were flushed with phosphate-buffered saline (pH=7.4) for 1hr under the same conditions. Before and after the blood filtration, Lp and kM for Tryptophan(Try), vitamin B2(VB2), vitamin B12(VB12) and cytochrome C(Cyt) were measured by the stop method and the optical fiber method we have proposed, respectively. Reduction rate of kM caused by protein fouling are summarized in the table. Reduction rate of Lp was 13% for AM-BC-X and 36% for APS-E. Based on the TCPDM, pore plugging decreases kM in the same proportion for all solutes, which is in agreement with data of AM-BC-X. In pore narrowing, reduction rate of kM increases with increasing of solute size, and further Lp is greatly decreased, which is in agreement with data of APS-E.TableIn conclusion, plugging and narrowing caused by protein adhesion on membrane surfaces occur for AM-BC-X and APS-E, respectively, which reduce kM and Lp." @default.
