A major portion of the u.v.-induced lethality was prevented by photoreactivation in white light. Survival was qualitatively and quantitatively similar for growth in nitrogen-fixing and nitrate-supported conditions. Prolonged u.v. irradiation caused the induction of giant cells, misalignment of cells in the filament and true branching. These u.v.-induced morphological abnormalities were not stable and disappeared in most cases after the fifth subculture in aerated liquid media. The induction of true branching appears to be of significance in the evolution of algae belonging to the Stigonematales. Low u.v. fluences did not affect growth or induce morphological abnormalities, but stimulated heterocyst differentiation." @default.
