- W2012542023 abstract "The aim of the present study is to simulate competitive ultra-endurance exercise as close as is possible under laboratory conditions and to investigate whether exercise under these conditions leads to a gradual increase in protein catabolism. Six highly trained male triathletes participated in this study. After an overnight fast a primed continuous infusion of [l-13C]-leucine was started and protein metabolism was measured by collecting breath and blood samples first during 4 h of rest, than 6 h of exercise (starting with cycling1 for 2.5 h (50% VO2max), than running for 1 h (±11 km/h) and ending with 2.5 h of cycling2 (50% VO2max)), and finally during 4 h of recovery. Subjects were fed continuously by ingesting carbohydrate drinks every 30 min during the entire 14 h of the experiment (0.8 g/min). A stable isotope steady state was obtained during the last 2 h of the resting periods and during the last hour of both exercise periods. Protein oxidation, synthesis and degradation were calculated from the steady state enrichments of breath CO2 (IRMS) and plasma KIC (GC-MS). Protein metabolism (mean±sd; mg protein/kg·h; values with same symbols: P<0.05) Table In conclusion: Protein oxidation and net protein degradation are higher during exercise while protein synthesis is lower. All variables return to baseline levels within 4 h of recovery. Protein degradation did not change during exercise and was lower during recovery compared with the resting period.
