- W2012591521 abstract "The usual story of modern American environmental politics follows the transition from a golden era of bipartisanship and legislative innovation, which defined the 1960s and 1970s, to an era of partisanship and legislative gridlock, which has hampered environmental reform since the 1980s. During the golden era, environmental activists worked with Democrats and Republicans to lay the legislative groundwork of the modern environmental regulatory state. But in the more recent years of partisanship, far-reaching pieces of legislation championed by Democrats to address newer issues such as climate change, or strengthen older issues such as toxic pollution regulation, have failed. Instead, those initiatives have run up hard against conservative Republican opposition to an expanded federal regulatory state. In Loving Nature, Fearing the State: Environmentalism and Antigovernment Politics before Reagan, Brian Allen Drake demonstrates that the usual story—pitting liberal Democratic environmentalists against conservative Republican opponents—overlooks the complex ways in which conservatives engaged in modern American environmental politics. In making this argument, Drake contributes both to the growing literature on the rise of the conservative Right and to studies on the American environmental movement, an intersection that has been explored by few other scholars. Two contributions distinguish this book. First, it considers how conservatives of many stripes—from traditionalists to libertarians—both reacted and contributed to environmental discourse in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Second, in asking these questions, it accomplishes something that few other histories of modern environmentalism have: it considers how environmental reformers have engaged fundamental questions of American political philosophy, such as “ideas about the individual, government, and the proper relationship between the two.” As Drake explains, these are “classic questions of American political philosophy” (p. 7)." @default.
