- W2012594787 abstract "In the elegant misfit dislocation theory originally developed by van der Merwe, the Peierls-Nabarro model is used to describe the equilibrium of the interfacial shear forces existing between two semi-infinite crystals. If the normal force acting on the interface is neglected, a simple analytical expression can be obtained without significant error in the resulting interfacial energy value. Although this energy expression has been used extensively in the area of thin film epitaxial growth to predict the state and extent of pseudomorphism, the stress and strain parts of the formulation have never been reliably applied to other practical problems because of the lack of mathematical rigor. In view of a need for these stress and strain expressions, the same elasticity problem is reconsidered in this paper. It is found that the original approximate expressions contain parameters which imply a slipping rather than a welded nature for the interface. After further consideration the mathematical consequence of assuming slipping surfaces is found to originate from neglecting the normal force and thus this formulation is shown to be inappropriate in describing misfit dislocations. Consequently the complete expressions without the approximation are derived." @default.
