- W2012659663 abstract "Venography was carried out on the operating table in patients under general anesthesia. The clearance time of contrast from leg veins was observed under various conditions. It disappeared more rapidly with the patient awake than when anesthestized with muscles relaxed. Wrapping one leg with elastic bandages failed to produce more rapid clearance under the wrap than that observed in controls. In addition, whenever the proximal leg was accidentally wrapped more tightly than the distal leg, dangerous stagnation occurred. Leg elevation with the trunk horizontal was not as effective as placing the table in the Trendelenberg position with the ankles 8 inches above the head. The latter was superior to either wrapping or the controls and the differences observed were statistically significant.Collateral venous channels, thought to be secondary to previous deep calf phlebitis, empty slowly and may make these extremities more susceptible to recurrent phlebitis than normal veins.Aortic cross clamping for resection of abdominal aortic aneurysms resulted in severe stagnation of blood in the leg veins. The fact that aneurysm surgery is not associated with a greater incidence of thrombophlebitis than that accruing to other major abdominal operations is surprising if venous stasis is the major factor in the pathogenesis of this process. It may be that systemic or regional heparinization, frequently employed during resection of aneurysms, protects the leg veins from thrombosis." @default.
