- W2012723626 abstract "It is a great honor to be invited to deliver this year's annual Edward E. Mason Founders Lecture. My personal and professional ties with Dr. Mason (Fig. 1) go back many years, to symposia and workshops at the University of Iowa (UI) Memorial Union Auditorium (Fig. 2). It was the perfect environment for surgeons, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to discuss the advances in surgical procedures, patient assessment, and the physiology and metabolism of gastric restrictive and malabsorptive operations for the treatment of severe obesity. Those pioneering talks set the foundation for the development of new approaches to weight loss surgery based on the emerging science of severe obesity. In the 10 years before these UI meetings, annual surgical society meetings provided a forum for the Mason/UI presentation of diverse research and educational reports and the sharing of surgical, clinical, and research experiences—successes, problems, and suggestions for improvements—with other academic groups interested in weight loss surgery. Fig. 2First meetings of the Mason Surgical Treatment of Obesity Symposium Workshop began in 1976, held in the University of Iowa Memorial Union Auditorium. The American Society of Bariatric Surgery was founded at this symposium workshop in 1983, and Dr. Mason became its first president. View Large Image Figure Viewer Download Hi-res image" @default.
