- W2012817352 abstract "Abstract The nature of intramembrane molecular events underlying the nerve impulse is analysed. Classical data revealed quite specific conductance changes for sodium and potassium in voltage clamped axonal membrane and newer approaches suggested the proteic nature and indicated the surface distributions of the membrane components undergoing structural transitions. The commonly held idea that these transitions are mere displacements of electric charges solely due to the electric fields cannot account for basic voltage clamp and microcalorimetric data and does not resist thermodynamic tests which point to the existence of external energy imput to the axonal membrane. The occurrence of biochemical changes accompanying bioelectrogenesis is once again argued, the more so because on this basis, electrophysiological data can be reproduced from kinetic models with the same accuracy as in Hodgkin-Huxley formal description. Recent developments concerning the link between sodium conductance of axonal membranes and the phosphorylation level of some high molecular weight membrane proteins are finally evoked." @default.
