- W2012909172 abstract "Motion compensation with spatial transformation has proven to be more efficient than that of the conventional block matching technique. In this paper we report on the application of bidirectional usage of this technique in improving the coding efficiency of interframe coders further. Bidirectional block matching used in the standard video codecs, such as MPEG and H.263, has improved the coding efficiency of these codes over their H.261 predecessors. This is because in the unidirectional motion compensation, motion of the uncovered objects cannot be compensated unless access to future frames can be made. In our codec the motion estimation is carried out with the spatial transform. For reduction of the motion vector overhead we have segmented the image and quantized the neighboring motion vectors. We report on the optimum number of bidirectional motion compensated pictures for various bit rates, ranging from 32 kbit/s to 64 kbit/s.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
