These substances account for many of the symptoms of allergic diseases.<sup>2</sup>Approaches to the therapy of immediate hypersensitivity reactions can be broadly categorized into four principal strategies: (1) suppression of IgE biosynthesis, (2) generation of blocking antibodies, (3) prevention of IgE-mediated stimulation of mast cells, and (4) neutralization of the effects of the released mediators. We will consider herein the third of these strategies and focus in particular on preventing activation of the cells by interfering with the binding of IgE to the receptor or by aborting the early events that follow triggering of the receptor.
