- W2013136248 abstract "Chronically critically ill (CCI) patients have a multitude of metabolic derangements chiefly owing to prolonged activation and then adaptation of the immune–neuroendocrine axis (INA). Early endocrine changes resulting from acute critical illness and starvation include cytokine-mediated neuroendocrine activation with peripheral shunting of energy and nitrogen substrates from anabolic to catabolic pathways. These changes are engineered by coordinated changes in the growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH)/growth hormone (GH)/IGF-1, thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)/thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)/T3, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)/(luteinizing hormone (LH)/testosterone, and corticotropin-releasing hormons (CRH)/adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)/cortisol axes. Teleologically, anabolic processes are postponed as immune function, and wound-healing mechanisms are prioritized. There are no sound theoretical or scientifically proven hormonal interventions to abrogate this acute phase of endogenous healing, which has conferred a survival advantage for humans." @default.
