The association of lichen planus (LP) with liver diseases, especially primary biliary cirrhosis and chronic active hepatitis, has been observed. Depending on the various studies the prevalence of liver disease in LP patients oscillates between 0.1 and 35%. Recently a possible aetiological role for hepatotropic viruses has been suggested. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of liver diseases in patients diagnosed with lichen planus in our population. 101 patients, 57 (56,4%) women and 44 (43,5%) men, consecutively diagnosed with cutaneous and/or mucosal lichen planus between January 1992 and December 2000 were studied. The average age was 48 (range, 4 –78). 18 patients had a hepatic disease (1 cirrhosis, 2 primary biliary cirrhosis, 2 acute hepatitis, 6 chronic hepatitis, 3 alcoholic liver disease, 3 increase transaminases level, 1 hepatocarcinoma). Interestingly 9 of these patients were virus C positive, 1 HBsAg positive and 20 anti-HBs or anti- HBc positive. We demonstrated a frequent association between LP with liver abnormalities. Anti-hepatitis C virus antibodies were detected in 8.9% of the LP group. The possibility of hepatic disease in these patients should be ruled out." @default.
