- W2013266189 abstract "SINCE THE use of films is comparatively new there are, no doubt, many techniques that have not as yet been developed. The one use of films that seems to stand out is its ability to tell a story or describe a process. In this study, an attempt was made to use films that employed technical and non-tech nical words that presented problems of meaning in a class of fifth graders. In this type of presentation there should be a period of preparation before the film is shown, to prepare the children for certain essential information or to point up items of particular interest. After the showing, there should be a follow-up. This follow-up may take several forms such as discuss i o n, selecting new ideas, etc. It is the opinion of this writer that no follow -up is complete that does not include words used in the text of the film. No attempt was made in this study to keep an accurate account of words presented during follow-up periods, nor to designate any particular number of films used. The words used were selected at random from previous notes and no check was made on them until several weeks or months had elapsed after the children had seen the film. Twenty-five words were used in the study. A word was written on the blackboard and the class was instructed to te 11 what it meant to them. All suggestions were taken down by the teacher with no comment from her. Then a complete list of words with suggestions given by the children was prepared so that a copy could be given to each child. The children were asked to select one meaning of each word that they consider e d best. Twenty-three responded to this test and the results of their choices are shown below:" @default.
