- W2013270868 abstract "Abstract A large scale sanitation trial against the weevil Vanapa oberthuri Pouill. in a plantation of Hoop Pine ( Araucaria cunninghamii D. Don) at Wau in Papua New Guinea was carried out at six‐monthly intervals over a 3.5 year period. In the first two years, the routine sanitation method then practised by the Department of Forests was used (this involved the felling of infested trees and physical destruction of the weevil). This method gave little reduction in tree infestation. A further, but slight, reduction was accomplished later, when the method was modified to include slash as well as infested trees, and the total destruction of both as potential breeding sites. However, the generally poor results and the high cost of the sanitation measures ruled against their routine use. There was no regular pattern of attack shown in the plantation. Both feeding by the adults and damage of the trees by larvae was widespread. There was a high incidence (26.6 %) of attack in trees adjacent to those already infested. Examination of 10 infested trees showed that 88 % of the 152 attacks had occurred in the nodal region. Attacks were recorded along the stems from near ground level to the upper crown. The composition of 685 V. oberthuri found on the 10 trees was as follows: eggs (53.9 %), larvae (37.5%), pupae (2.3 %), immature adults (1.0 %) and mature adults (5.3 %). @default.
