- W2013383873 abstract "We read your Series on preterm birth, especially the paper on mortality and sequelae of preterm birth (Jan 19, p 261),1Saigal S Doyle LW An overview of mortality and sequelae of preterm birth from infancy to adulthood.Lancet. 2008; 371: 261-269Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (1986) Google Scholar with interest, since statistics on preterm birth and gestation-specific infant mortality have recently become available for the first time for England and Wales as a whole.2Moser K Macfarlane A Chow YH Hilder L Dattani N Introducing new data on gestation-specific infant mortality among babies born in 2005 in England and Wales.Health Stat Q. 2007; 35: 13-27PubMed Google Scholar, 3Office for National StatisticsPreterm births, England and Wales.http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/Product.asp?vlnk=14882&Pos=&ColRank=1&Rank=272Date: 2005Google Scholar, 4Moser K Hilder L Assessing quality of NHS Numbers for Babies data and providing gestational age statistics.Health Stat Q. 2008; 37: 15-23PubMed Google Scholar These data relate to all 645 887 livebirths that occurred in England and Wales in 2005. They are therefore a valuable addition to the UK data presented in table 1 in the paper by Saroj Saigal and Lex Doyle because they are based on larger numbers of very preterm births and relate to the whole population. They also concern a more recent time period than the studies of survival among births at 22–26 weeks of gestation cited by Saigal and Doyle. In 2005, 0·33% of the 640 599 live-births of known gestational age occurred at 22–26 weeks but they accounted for more than 30% of infant deaths. Although we will be validating the gestational age recording for births of 22 and 23 weeks against external sources, our data (table) suggest higher survival rates in very preterm babies born in 2005 than those derived from the UK studies in the mid-1990s cited in Saigal and Doyle's article.1Saigal S Doyle LW An overview of mortality and sequelae of preterm birth from infancy to adulthood.Lancet. 2008; 371: 261-269Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (1986) Google Scholar These national statistics will be produced routinely in the future to enable trends to be monitored.TableDeaths in the first year of life among babies born in England and Wales in 2005Gestational age (completed weeks)2223242526Number of livebirths152283474499704Number of deaths under the age of 1 year144239276176167Proportion surviving to the age of 1 year5·3%15·6%41·8%64·7%76·3%Infant deaths per 1000 livebirths947·4844·5582·3352·7237·2Data from Office for National Statistics.2Moser K Macfarlane A Chow YH Hilder L Dattani N Introducing new data on gestation-specific infant mortality among babies born in 2005 in England and Wales.Health Stat Q. 2007; 35: 13-27PubMed Google Scholar Open table in a new tab Data from Office for National Statistics.2Moser K Macfarlane A Chow YH Hilder L Dattani N Introducing new data on gestation-specific infant mortality among babies born in 2005 in England and Wales.Health Stat Q. 2007; 35: 13-27PubMed Google Scholar We declare that we have no conflict of interest." @default.
