- W20134978 abstract "Genetic modification offers considerable potential to alter specific cellular traits for improved nitrogen fixation performances. However, to achieve the true potential from nitrogen fixing microorganisms under normal agricultural practice it is necessary to have a better understanding of the factors governing the microbial ecology of the rhizosphere. Relevant factors include saprophytic competence of the introduced strain, competition for nodulation (in the case of a symbiosis) and the influence of both beneficial (mycorrhizae) and detrimental (plant pathogens) members of the rhizosphere microbiota. The role of key microbial components in maintaining the nitrogen fixation process for plant productivity needs to be better understood. Molecular tools are now available to probe and modify these interactions, and emerging molecular microbial ecology approaches are being applied in the rhizosphere. In a European Union multidisciplinary research initiative, a number of laboratories are collaborating in the framework of the IMPACT project to investigate the performance and interactions of wild type and genetically modified microbial inoculants.KeywordsNitrogen FixationGenetically ModifyMycorrhizal FungusMicrobial InoculantImpact ProjectThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
