Vivian Thompson publication centenary. One hundred years ago, a landmark paper was published in The Geographical Journal by F. V. Thompson in which a new photogrammetric plotting instrument, survey camera and techniques of terrestrial stereophotogrammetry were developed and used for topographic map making. Vivian Thompson had begun to work out methods of topographic survey using stereoscopic photography in 1905. He was, at that time, Instructor in Surveying and Photography at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, Kent. In August 1907, with his Stereo-plotter already in advanced prototype form, he carried out a survey of the Cumbrian fell country south of Keswick in the English Lake District. Publication of the results of this trial survey, together with a description of the Stereo-plotter followed, in May 1908, in The Geographical Journal ( Thompson, 1908). The image opposite is a reduced copy of the Keswick map, with the textual information slightly moved to fit the format of today’s Photogrammetric Record. An exhaustive account of Vivian Thompson’s pioneering contribution to photogrammetry, including a copy of the map, was given to the Royal Geographical Society to mark the centenary of his birth in 1980 ( Atkinson, 1980). Thompson’s equipment and techniques were used to good effect in mapping part of the Taghdumbash Pamir in 1913, surveys which were subsequently incorporated in mapping published by the Survey of India.
