- W2013651105 abstract "Abstract One of the more significant problems with Behavior Based Safety (BBS) Observation systems is the management of information, including the input of data into a repository, and the extraction of tangible outputs and actionable issues in a timely manner. BJ Services Company and JW Toups, Inc. have collaborated on the development, testing and implementation of a scannable system that captures BBS observations and interventions. The system allows the end user to scan hundreds of BBS cards and run reports on leading indicators within days. The system outputs trending data in an easy-to-read pie chart format for review in safety meetings and posting on bulletin boards. The scanning aspect of the system reduces both input time and administrative cost. A cost reduction of as much as 40% can be realized depending on current input techniques. In addition, the system automates the notification of management when the person completing the observation indicates management needs to take action. Management is then able to react more quickly and with a focus on the issues that really matter. This quick response increases employee participation in the BBS process. The pilot location reported an increase in participation of 30% when comparing subsequent quarters. The system solves the issue of managing information by providing management the tools to determine leading indicators and actionable items quickly and efficiently that, when addressed, make a safer workplace. Introduction Behavior Based Safety (BBS) as a means of improving workplace safety is not a new concept. Its roots can be traced back to the 1930s and the work performed by Herbert Heinrich. Heinrich concluded that as many as 90% of all workplace incidents are directly attributable to man-failures or the unsafe action of workers (SEMCOSH Fact Sheet: Behavior Based Safety 2004). As BBS developed, it has been implemented in many workplaces to reduce accidents and injuries, but with varying degrees of success. As concluded by Professor Judith Komaki (Business & Legal Report White Paper: Behavior Based Safety Evolves 2006) and others in early trials conducted in the 1970s and 1980s, the two principal aspects of BBS are the behavior observation and feedback processes. However, a third aspect, often neglected by researchers, is the recording, collection and analyzing of data related to the observation. Current systems are generally weak in providing an easy means to record data, a timely means to enter data into a repository and an efficient way to analyze the data that will output a meaningful report management may act upon. Background BJ Services Company (BJ) introduced a BBS initiative in late calendar year 2004. As the initiative evolved, it became apparent that the effort required to input data and export results was significant. It required two to three minutes to enter the data on a single observation. Additionally, the extraction of data (reports, charts, graphs) for the implementation of actionable items was cumbersome to the point people would not perform the analysis. To address these issues, BJ Services Company implemented a pilot program in Houma, Louisiana, for a scan process that also included a friendlier reporting tool." @default.
