- W2013659043 abstract "Abstract Thirty male subjects, aged 22–25, in a series of double blind experiments, were given either 10 mg amphetamine, or 800 mg meprobamate, or a placebo, 45 min before a test session. All the subjects were submitted to four test sessions, at 2-week intervals, the first session was a control session. The same test-battery was performed in all four sessions: —a memory and attention test, which was not affected by either drug; —a precision motor test: at the beginning of the learning period, amphetamine improves considerably the performance level: this effect is only temporary and concerns the number as well as the duration of error; —BATP (barrage test): in this test, performances are also considerably improved by amphetamine, particularly at the beginning of the experiment; this effect is also temporary. Conversely, meprobamate seems to show an inhibitory effect at the beginning of the learning period. The evolution of the performances were then studied comparatively for the sympathico-tonic and the vago-tonic subjects. In general, meprobamate seems to act in a different way on both groups of subjects, whereas amphetamine acts indifferently. The selectivity of action of the drugs is different when, on the other hand, one studies the evolution of the performances of the best test subjects as compared to the remaining of the group; in this case, amphetamine has a selective activity on the poor test subjects whereas meprobamate acts indifferently on both groups. The subjects described very poorly the various drugs, especially amphetamine which fifteen subjects identified as depressant. Amphetamine increased slightly the systolic pressure and meprobamate decreased it, but no variation of the heart frequency was noticed. Upon further analysis, it appeared that in the sympathico-tonic subjects, both drugs increased the heart frequency whereas in the vagotonic subjects, a decrease of the heart frequency was observed as a result of both the exciting and the depressive drug." @default.
