- W201367952 abstract "This paper presents our latest experimental findings of impurity scavenging from powder metallurgy (PM) titanium alloys by rare earth elements, based on in-situ heating synchrotron radiation and detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. Yttrium was selected as a rare earth addition in the form of yttrium hydride to three different PM titanium materials (CP-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2.25Mo-1.5Fe). Simultaneous scavenging of oxygen and chlorine occurred during sintering and this resulted in the formation of both chlorine-free oxygen-deficient yttrium oxides and essentially oxygen-free yttrium chlorides. The results obtained from in-situ heating synchrotron radiation up to 1300 oC revealed how the scavenging of oxygen occurs and the process that controls the scavenging of oxygen. The effect of impurity scavenging by rare earth elements on the microstructural changes and mechanical properties is discussed." @default.
