- W2013982270 abstract "Summary A new hypotrich morphotype, Parastrongylidium , was collected in samples of activated sludge from two domestic waste water treatment plants near Barcelona. Its morphology was first described as Parastrongylidium pyriformis Salvado et al., 1995 and it had characteristics which lay between Parastrongylidium martini Fleury & Fryd-Versavel, 1984 and Parastrongylidium oswaldi Aescht & Foissner, 1992. In view of recent data it was considered appropriate to present and discuss the results. The organism is pyriform in vivo with a pointed anterior. Infraciliature stains revealed a great variability in the described characteristics. The nuclear apparatus is more variable in morphology than in the two kinds of Parastrongylidium already described. The provision of new data of Parastrongylidium leads us to consider P. pyriformis as a synonym of P. oswaldi . This inclusion considerably increases the variation of P. oswaldi. This hypotrich morphotype was common, found in 40% of the samples, though never exceeding 15% of the total number of ciliates. The operational parameters of these two activated sludge plants were studied in order to assess the ecological requirements of Parastrongylidium ." @default.
