- W2014003681 abstract ": We have read the rapid communication of A.C. Koong et al. in this journal with great interest (1). In this article, the authors describe O2 tensions (pO2) in adenocarcinomas of the pancreas and in adjacent normal pancreas, and they conclude that “tumor hypoxia exists within pancreatic cancers.” We believe that this information is of great interest to biologists and clinical oncologists, because recent preclinical and clinical studies suggest that sustained hypoxia can enhance malignant progression and may increase aggressiveness through clonal selection and genome changes. These alterations can further increase resistance to sparsely ionizing radiation, some forms of chemotherapy (e.g., cyclophosphamide, carboplatin), and photodynamic therapy, and can impact long-term prognosis (for recent reviews see [2–4])." @default.
