- W2014027575 abstract "Four distinct types of muscle fibre can be distinguished in the tibialis anterior muscle of the rabbit. They differ in their staining properties and in their locations within fasciculi. Type I fibres contain many mitochondria which are evenly distributed throughout the cross sectional area of the fibre. They stain strongly for myoglobin and show little staining for myosin ATPase and phosphorylase activities. Intermediate fibres possess sub-sarcolemmal concentrations of mitochondria whilst their central regions contain few mitochondria. They possess a moderate staining reaction for myoglobin and show intermediate staining properties for myosin ATPase and phosphorylase activities. Two sub-varieties of type II fibre, tentatively termed types IIa and IIb, are also present. Type IIa fibres are large and do not stain for myoglobin. Type IIb fibres are smaller, they stain strongly for myoglobin and contain more mitochondria. They possess strong and identical staining reactions for myosin ATPase and phosphorylase activities. Type I fibres occur singly in the central regions of fasciculi. Each is surrounded by a number of intermediate fibres thus forming distinct clumps of oxidative fibres. These clumps have tentatively been termed sub-fasciculi. Type IIa fibres predominate in the periphery of fasciculi whilst the less numerous type IIb fibres are distributed randomly. The formation of sub-fasciculi may ensure a more efficient blood supply to the oxidative muscle fibres." @default.
