- W2014211211 abstract "EPTIC SHOCK is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU) today. The incidence of sepsis caused by gram-negative rods has been estimated to be between 72,000 and 300,000 cases per year, and the incidence of septic shock between 30,000 and 120,000 cases per year in the United States.“’ The incidence of all septic shock, including gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, fungi, and viruses, is substantially higher than this number, although data on the exact incidence of these organisms are lacking. Sepsis appears to be increasing in incidence due to increasingly aggressive chemotherapy, immunosuppressive therapy, increasing survival of patients predisposed to infections, and increasing use of invasive medical devices.3 Despite improvements in antibiotic therapy and Intensive Care Unit management of critically ill patients, the mortality rate from septic shock has not changed much over the past 15 years, remaining between 40% and 90% (most recent large series estimate 50G).4-16" @default.
