- W2014240167 abstract "This book is a study of the barīd system of communication under the major medieval Muslim dynasties in central Islamic lands. While Part 2 is largely based on Silverstein's doctoral dissertation, Parts 1 and 3 flank, as it were, this portion of the book both chronologically and geographically. Part 1 sets up the analysis of Umayyad and later communications with a discussion of pre-Islamic transportation routes and postal services from the Roman Mediterranean in the west to Sassanid Iran in the east. Part 3 focuses on the adoption and adaptation of the Mongol yām in the Middle East. The historical development of communication networks in western Islamic lands, no less than the environment, keeps the geographical boundaries of the study to the central core of the Islamic world. In the Maghrib, Silverstein reaches west only as far as the Fatimid empire did; he also excludes South and Southeast Asia and the Ottoman Empire." @default.
