- W2014260072 abstract "Abstract This paper reviews a number of studies conducted by the author and colleagues into the importance of “flow” and other skill-challenge relationships for positive subjective states and psychological well-being. Flow was operationalised as perceived high skills equal to perceived high challenges, and was measured by the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). Individuals carried watches for one week which were pre-programmed to “bleep” eight times a day. At each “bleep” a short questionnaire was answered. The studies replicate several of the findings of previous researchers showing the importance of flow for positive subjective states. They also show that not all flow is enjoyable, and that it is enjoyable flow which is associated with better psychological well-being. In addition, the studies show the importance of low challenge situations where skills are equal or greater, for positive subjective states. In line with other studies, the research shows that employment rather than leisure was the main source of flow. The influence of both situations and motivations on flow is discussed, and the advantages of using a research strategy studying person-situation interactions is noted." @default.
