- W2014271350 abstract "Efficiency has been shown to influence cycling performance. Decrease in gross efficiency was related to decrease in endurance performance after 1-h exercise. To our knowledge, there is no information on the changes in efficiency and VO2 kinetics induced by longer exercise. PURPOSE To determine if a prolonged (> 4 h) road cycling race led to important changes in VO2 kinetics and efficiency. METHODS Sixteen trained cyclists (age: 40.3 ± 10.9 yrs; training amount: 10313 ± 3995 km.yr-1) performed maximally over an hilly road race (140 km; total elevation: 1750 m; duration: 280.1 ± 26.0 min). Prior and immediately after the race, they performed a 6-min exercise at the same constant intensity (253.1 ± 31.5 W; > ventilatory threshold) and pedaling cadence (80 rpm) and a force-velocity test to determine the maximal power (Pmax). VO2, VE and RER were measured using a breath-by-breath gas analyzer and power output using a powermeter crankset. The amplitude of the VO2 slow component (VO2SC) was calculated as the difference between VO2s measured at 6th and 3rd min. Net efficiency (NE) was calculated as the ratio between the mean values of power output and net energy expended. RESULTS VO2 and VE at the 3rd min were higher (53.9 ± 5.3 vs 48.9 ± 6.8 ml.min-1.kg-1; p < 0.05 and 110.1 ± 17.9 vs 95.5 ± 16.9 l.min-1; p < 0.001, respectively) whereas VO2SC and Pmax were not different (4.5 ± 1.8 vs 5.4 ± 2.9 ml.min-1.kg-1 and 580 ± 96 vs 582 ± 82 W, respectively) after than prior the race. RER was smaller at the 3rd min (0.94 ± 0.07 vs 0.98 ± 0.06; p < 0.001) after than prior the race. NE was significantly lower after than prior the race (19.7 ± 1.2 vs 21.4 ± 3.0%; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The depletion in glycogen may be more pronounced in type I than in type II fibers, inducing, after the race, a higher contribution of these later fibers, that have a lower P/O ratio. This may explain partly the decrease in efficiency. In addition, the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption following the race and the increased ventilation contributed to the differences observed." @default.
