- W2014304657 abstract "Weak sandstones are here defined as having a saturated uniaxial compression strength of 0·5–20 MPa. The mineralogy, texture, density, porosity and saturated moisture content of these materials have been studied together with their permeability, strength and deformability. Microscopic characters, in particular mineral composition, packing density, area of grain contact and grain size distribution, were successfully used to explain the strength, deformability and permeability of weak sandstones. A practical index parameter for assessing the strength and deformability of weak sandstones has been revealed by this work and is their saturated moisture content. Relevant aspects of the behaviour of weak sandstones may be combined in a geotechnical classification such as that proposed in this Paper for these materials. The sandstones studied came from Brazil, Portugal, Turkey and the UK. L'article définit les grès peu résistants comme ceux qui possèdent une résistance à la compression uniaxiale dans l'état saturé comprise entre 0, 5 et 20 MPa. Les différents aspects de ces grès—minéralogie, texture, densité, porosité et teneur en eau dans l'état saturé—ont été étudiés en même temps que leur perméabilité, leur résistance et leur déformabilité. On a réussi à expliquer la résistance, la déformabilité et la perméabilité des grès peu resistants surtout à partir de leurs caractéristiques microscopiques—composition minérale, densité d'assemblage, surface de contact entre les grains et répartition granulométrique. Ce travail a révélé que la teneur en eau dans l'état saturé des grès peu résistants représente un paramètre pratique pour évaluer leur résistance et leur déformabilité. Une classification géotechnique telle que celle proposée dans cet article pour les grès peu résistants combine des aspects importants de leur comportement.
