- W2014310410 abstract "The capacities of Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, of different ages to discriminate between samples of saliva drawn from their known or potential social partners were examined using simultaneous two-choice preference tests. In the first experiment, weanling gerbils (24–27 days old) were attracted equally to saliva of either parent when presented concurrently, but exhibited a strong preference for their mother's or father's saliva when paired with unfamiliar parental saliva. Experiment 2 revealed that female juvenile gerbils (40–50 days ols), but not males, prefer same-sex sibling saliva. Neither juvenile females, nor males, showed a significant preference for saliva drawn from siblings and non-siblings of the opposite sex. As adults (90–100 days old), males and females are preferentially attracted to saliva from non-siblings of the opposite sex. Salivary stimuli may serve as chemosignals to help conspecifics make discriminations along biologically relevant dimensions and, perhaps, to promote contact between appropriate social partners at important periods in ontogeny." @default.
