- W2014348159 abstract "Television is responsible for more multicultural education than our public school system. The literature reveals that children's programming reflects society's dominant values and beliefs about a number of diversity-related topics such as race and gender. This article describes the findings of a unique study of preservice teachers' evaluations of children's television programming. Through a list of research-based suggestions, teacher educators are encouraged to prepare preservice teachers to draw upon televisions multicultural teaching power so that young people become more critically literate viewers of television. Academia needs to understand that the popular press and the mass media educate more people about issues regarding ethnicity and race than all other sources of education … providing more public education … than by teachers, professors, and anyone else.
