- W2014389664 abstract "About 18 years ago Marshak (1940) showed that if radioactive phosphorus was given to an animal bearing a tumour, an increased proportion of the 32P was absorbed by the cell nuclei of the tumour and could fairly easily be detected there. This raised the obvious idea that in the human patient the presence of a malignant tumour might be detected by giving a dose of 32P and then searching with a geiger counter for areas of excessive uptake. These investigations were carried out by several workers including Kenney, Marinelli and Woodard (1941), and Low-Beer (1946). In addition the use of other isotopes was tried, including 131I. Because 32P is a β emitter the detecting instrument must come within effective range of the β rays, usually within 3 to 4 mm of the active tissue. For this reason the counter must be able to come very close to the possible tumour site and the use of phosphorus is ruled out in many instances. In other cases, however, such as the search for intraocular tumours, the effect may turn out to be a positive advantage because it is impossible to receive counts from more than a very small volume of surrounding normal tissues, so that background is kept down to a reasonable level and the excess counts from a small tumour are not swamped." @default.
