- W2014438435 abstract "The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of a 13.6 kg pseudo-pregnancy device (PPD) as a learning tool for changes in parameters of normal gait. Sixteen college-age subjects (7 female and 9 male) participated in the study. Parameters of right-sided normal gait were established. The subjects then wore the PPD for two hours during normal activity. After two hours, parameters of PPD gait were analyzed. Variables included: hip, ankle,& knee ROM; step width, step length, & foot angles; and cadence, stride length, & walking velocity. A one-way ANOVA was used to determine pre/post- significance (p<0.05). These variables were compared to those obtained from a case study (unpublished) of gait patterns during the gestational period of a 35 y.o. female (PF) with a weight gain of 13.6 kg. The trends observed for PF were increased step width (4 cm vs 10 cm), decreased stride length (135.5 cm vs 118.5 cm), decreased walking velocity (132.6 cm/sec vs 105 cm/sec), and decreased percentage of the gait cycle spent in swing (% swing) (42.4% vs 39.1%). When compared to the PF, the PPD gait showed some of the same trends: stride length decreased slightly from 135.9 cm to 133.5 cm; walking velocity decreased signicicantly from 127.5 cm/sec to 126.5 cm/sec; step width increased slightly from 9.8 cm to 11.1 cm; and% swing decreased significantly from 41.5% to 40.2%. Therefore, although the PPD was only worn for two hours, it appears to mimic some gait changes observed during a normal pregnancy. It is concluded that the PPD is a useful learning tool for simulating pregnancy gait changes." @default.
