- W2014576145 abstract "594 sediment samples from eight areas situated along the crest of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and the Galapagos Rift System (GRS) have been analyzed for 12 elements in order to evaluate the relative importance of the metalliferous component in each of the areas. The data show marked differences in sediment composition between the two rifts. The non-carbonate fraction of the Galapagos Rift sediments consists of detrital alumosilicates, biogenic opal and probably authigenic Fe-smectite. Surface sediments are diagenetically enriched in Mn. From east to west, the detrital contribution decreases as the authigenic Fe-smectite increases. Authigenic Fe-smectite is most abundant at the tectonically active wall of the northern margin of the Galapagos gore in the Hess Deep area. Hydrothermal input increases markedly along the EPR from 2° N to 42° S. The maximum input, identified from high Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn values, is at 20° S. Bottom currents have shifted the metalliferous sediments to the west of the rise at this location. South of 10° S the sediments are basically undifferentiated Fe—Mn hydroxides." @default.
