- W2014644827 abstract "It has been suggested that delays in achieving effective rodent control may occur because dominant individuals refrain from eating new foods until they have seen subdominants eat them without ill effects; dominant animals are thus more neophobic than subdominants. In this study, laboratory-housed rats (Rattus norvegicus) were tested in triads to determine whether rank affects neophobia towards a new, readily available and highly palatable food. In contrast to predictions, the dominant rat in each group fed more from the novel food on the day of presentation than did the lower-ranked animals. The lower-ranked rats sampled the novel food later, possibly because they spent less time in exploratory behaviour and so discovered it later. The dominant rats spent the majority of their time in the main cage, perhaps to exclude subdominants. In consequence it is possible that dominants fed from the novel food purely because it was more readily available. Thus the exclusion from bait points of subdominants, by dominants, may be an alternative explanation for problems in practical rodent control, but field studies are needed to confirm this." @default.
