- W2014757575 abstract "Can the reactions to noxious stimulation of one animal serve as an adequate stimulus to motivate learning by another animal? Research on this topic is meager. In a study by Child (1938) evidence was presented for the development of a taboo in rhesus monkeys involving the inhibition of a foodgetting response. Two platforms were available: one contained high preference banana, and the other low preference carrot. Whenever one member of a group of three animals climbed on the platform containing the banana, the remaining Ss were punished. By this means it was possible to establish a persistent inhibition of responses to this platform. A related phenomenon has recently been demonstrated by Church (1959) who showed that the fear responses of one albino rat can serve as an adequate conditioned stimulus for producing fear in another rat. This study also demonstrated that prior to any emotional conditioning rats showed a depression of bar-pressing during the pain responses of another animal but this depression rapidly adapted. The present study was designed to replicate and extend Child's findings by investigating the effects of shock administered to a partner on S's responses on an instrumental task. A secondary purpose was to assess the effects of the experimental conditions on the food-getting dominance relations of the participants." @default.
