Endosonography-guided celiac plexus neurolysis. Gastrointest Endosc. 1996; 44: 656-662 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (372) Google Scholar EUS is traditionally not used to stage cancers in patients with esophageal or enteral self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) because such patients have unresectable malignant disease. There is also a commonly held belief that EUS cannot be performed through an SEMS (Fig. 1). There are also certain situations in which EUS staging may be indicated in patients with these stents. In addition, there may be situations in which interventional EUS may be beneficial. Currently, it is unknown whether EUS images can be obtained through the mesh of an SEMS. However, two patients were recently encountered in whom EUS was indicated despite the presence of a metallic stent: one patient with metastatic gastric cancer and severe abdominal pain was in need of EUS-guided celiac nerve block, and another with esophageal cancer wished to be reconsidered for curative surgery. These two cases are presented to illustrate the technical feasibility, limitations, and safety of performing EUS from within a Wallstent stent." @default.
