- W2014843396 abstract "Abstract The role of vitamin B-6 in amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism suggests that inadequate dietary vitamin B-6 may impair protein synthesis. To test this hypothesis, male rats (initially 225±6 g; n=8/treatment group) were fed control or marginal levels of vitamin B-6 (5.8 or 1.2 mg total vitamin B-6/kg diet, by analysis) ad libitum for 9 weeks. Both groups ate and gained weight at similar rates. Protein synthesis rates were measured in liver, kidney and skeletal muscle at week 9 using a flooding dose of 3 H-phenylalanine. Marginal vitamin B-6 intake did not elevate xanthurenic acid excretion following a tryptophan load. However, marginal vitamin B-6 intake did depress liver protein absolute synthesis rate by 23% (2008 vs. 1549 mg/day, P=.024), liver wet weight by 16% (P=.001) and liver protein content by 22% (P" @default.
