- W2014883766 abstract "Biophoton emission or ultraweak photon emission has been hypothesized to be an indirect measure of a by-product of aerobic metabolism, namely, reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species also provide information relative to cellular damage. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine potential changes to reactive oxygen species concentrations following exercise by biophoton emission. METHODS: Fifteen healthy college-aged males who exercised regularly and were not claustrophobic, nor dark-phobic, volunteered for this study. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were monitored carefully during aerobic exercise (cycling) in a normal laboratory setting, while biophoton emission was assessed during the same exercise in a dark room. Subjects exercised for 15 minutes at a workload equal to 150W. The two sessions were separated by one week of rest. Pre and post exercise conditions were compared by paired t-tests and statistical significance was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: As expected, oxygen consumption and heart rate increased significantly (p<0.01) during the exercise protocol in the laboratory condition, indicating a significant increase in metabolism. However, unexpectedly, Biophoton emission was significantly decreased (p<0.05) during the cycle exercise in the dark room compared to resting conditions, contrary to our expected hypothesis. The biophoton emission decrease might be explained by the fact that these subjects were fairly well trained, so that it might be possible that little or no reactive oxygen species were produced at the submaximal exercise intensities which were used in this protocol. CONCLUSION: Low to moderate intensity exercise was not sufficiently intense enough to produce enough reactive oxygen species that could be detected by biophoton emission." @default.
