- W2014899183 abstract "A study has been made of the concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb in the aquatic liverwort Scapania undulata in streams and rivers in England, France, Germany and Ireland. Brief general observations are included to help the use of this plant as an environmental monitor. Many of the sites are influenced by past or present mining activities and provide a wide range of levels of aqueous metal. S. undulata is resistant to high levels of these heavy metals, reaching, at one site, 7·0 mg litre−1 Zn, 0·028 mg litre−1 Cd and 1·74 mg litre−1 Pb (filtrable). Pooled 1 cm terminal tips of shoots were used for monitoring metal levels. Highly significant positive correlations were found between the logarithm of the concentration of each metal and the logarithm of the concentration of the same metal in both total and filtrable water samples. Statistical analyses of the data suggest that rises in pH and/or Ca lead to increased accumulation of Zn and Cd; pH may also have a moderate influence on Pb accumulation. It is suggested that the response of Zn and Cd accumulation to H+ is a real effect, but that to Ca may be an artefact due to high environmental correlation with pH." @default.
