- W2014927143 abstract "Previous research has identified a number of factors that appear to moderate the behavioural response to glucose administration. Previously identified sources of variance in the behavioural response include physiological state, dose, types of cognitive tasks used and cognitive demand. Potential moderating factors will be discussed based on two experiments. Experiment 1 further investigated the dose–response relationship of glucose and cognition through administration of a range of glucose dosages (0, 15, 25, 50 and 60 g) and aimed to identify whether optimal dose is task specific. Experiment 2 examined potential interactions between length of fasting interval (2 h versus 12 h) and optimum dose. The results revealed glucose facilitation of spatial working memory and verbal declarative memory following 25 g glucose. Moreover, experiment 2 demonstrated that the higher dose (60 g) increased working memory performance following an overnight fast, whereas the lower dose (25 g) enhanced working memory performance following a 2-h fast. While the findings of these experiments support the previously observed inverted-U shaped dose–response relationship with 25 g being the optimal glucose load, the data also suggests that optimal dosage may differ under conditions of depleted glucose resources. In addition, BMI was observed to be a moderating factor. However, further research is needed to develop a fully prognostic model of the moderating and mediating factors under which glucose facilitation is best achieved." @default.
