- W2014927781 abstract "Decreased leg strength (PkT), endurance (TW), and lean muscle mass (LLM) were reported following stays (129–145 d) on the Mir Space Station. During initial ISS missions, exercise hardware has not been available consistently; therefore, deconditioning would be expected. PURPOSE We hypothesized that US crewmembers would exhibit decreased knee extensor (KE) and flexor (KF) PkT and TW and LLM after ISS missions (138–196 d); PkT and TW would not recover by 30 d post-flight. METHODS Concentric PkT (N-m) was measured during KE and KF at 60 deg/s, and TW (N-m) was measured during 20 reps of KE and KF at 180 deg/s. Five crewmembers were tested 180 d (L-180) and 30 d (L-30) pre-flight and 6–8 d (R+7) and 28–30 d (R+29) post-flight. right LLM (DEXA) was measured at L-30 and R+7. Pre-flight (PRE) PkT and TW were accepted as the highest values obtained at L-180 or L-30. PkT and TW were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (p < 0.05, °). LLM was analyzed using paired t-test. Correlations between percent change (%Δ) LLM and %Δ in sum scores (KE+KF) of PkT and of TW were calculated. RESULTS Mean (±SE) PkT and TW were reduced at R+7. LLM was reduced at R+7 (9.1±0.6 vs. 8.6±0.8 kg). %Δ LLM was correlated with %Δ PkT (r=0.97) and TW (r=0.92) at R+7. Only, KF TW was not different than PRE by R+29.Table: No Caption AvailableCONCLUSION ISS crewmembers experienced similar losses to Mir crewmembers in PkT (27–31%), TW (26–27%), and LLM (7%) at R+7. ISS crewmembers did not recover by R+29." @default.
