- W2014928462 abstract "SUMMARY In all “colonial” folklores, the problem of origins continually arises: is a given piece of folklore heritage from the original homeland(s), borrowed from the new indigenouss peoples, or is it genuinely a new creation? Up to now folklorists generally had to be satisfied to coach their conclusions in fairly vague terms, because decisive information was largely lacking, e.g. M. Dorson: American Folklore, invariably points to the “lush American soil” to explain what he (often wrongly) regards as new growths in American lore. In the ensuing discussion the author sheds new light on this problem by making use of given elements in Afrikaans and American folklore, e.g. a comparatively rich snake-lore. This is made possible from the fact that both countries were mainly colonised during the 17th century, with stock from almost identical European homelands; in America Red Indian lore is a new contributing factor, in South Africa Malay influence; both countries used large numbers of West African slaves. Relying on these facts, one could now argue: In the case of common traditional folklore elements in Afrikaans and American culture: (1) where a mutual European homeland cannot be traced, one can safely conclude on West African influence; (2) where France or Germany—but not the Netherlands—can be traced as homeland, the Afrikaans tradition could either be French or German but not Dutch; (3) where an Afrikaans tradition could be traced to the Netherlands, but not to France or Germany, it would be of Dutch origin. This approach opens up a new avenue to the problem as stated, and to test its validity, a very close co-operative effort by Afrikaans, American and European folklorists is indicated. Perhaps it would be wise initially to concentrate on snake-lore." @default.
