- W2014967141 abstract "We have set up a model that allows the effect of the source and the drain in the quantum Hall effect to be investigated. The Landau levels in the inversion layer in the presence of the three-dimensional source and drain appear as resonant levels, coupled with the scattering states in the source and the drain. The coupling rate, which is also the decay rate, of a resonant level is found to be proportional to the thickness of the inversion layer, so reflections from the boundaries seem to be important. Nevertheless, the coupling is still sufficiently strong to establish an equilibrium between the occupation of the resonant levels and the scattering states under electric fields of up to about ${10}^{3}$ V/m (for B=1 T). Non-Ohmic corrections to the quantization of the Hall conductance due to such nonequilibrium effects are found to be an exponential function of the negative inverse of the electric field." @default.
