- W2014976361 abstract "The Editor, The recent report on Magnets and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) is very interesting. Rodriguez-Blanco, etal., reported a case where magnet use failed to inhibit ICD sensing of electromagnetic interference (EMI), and a shock was delivered to the patient. [1] As described by the authors, ICD is a widely used medical device and it can be problematic during surgery and anesthesia, particularly during surgery in the area close to the site of implantation of the ICD. There is no doubt that several devices during surgical procedure can cause EMI and can result in malfunctioning of the ICD. A recent report on a problematic case in ophthalmic surgery can be a good example. [2] It should also be noted that the non-medical device such as simple computer can also induce aberration of ICD function. [3] The good pre-, intra-, and post-operation care for the case with ICD is very important in anesthesiology. Prior consultation with qualified programmers is recommended to enable timely optimization of the device. [4] Nevertheless, preventive action by designing new generation device to lower EMI should be considered." @default.
