- W2015016758 abstract "Materials development presents a significant challenge for planetary balloon applications. Material property data from manufacturers is sparse regarding film, fiber and adhesive performance at cryogenic temperatures. This paper discusses testing performed under a Phase II NASA Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract to develop three-dimensionally reinforced (3DR) membrane technology. Specifically addressed are helium (He) gas transmission and tensile testing in the -63o to -128oC temperature range. A summary of our contributions from these tests to materials development is presented for several potential planetary balloon materials. In addition, the challenges inherent in performing these low temperature tests are discussed." @default.
