However, during the last two decades Japan has built many day care centers in order to allow mothers to take up full-time employment. These institutions already have opened up alternate pathways of socialization for at least one out of every four Japanese pre-schoolers. In a day care center a child may encounter messages that run counter to those of the national standard culture—messages that reflect the ideals of educators who staff the centers, and of social groups that provide support for them. This paper is to examine the following topics'. (1) How the nature of women's participation in the labor force has been changed (Labor-market demand)-, (2) How the labor-market de mand for working mothers is altering the nature of day care programs (Evolution of the programs); (5) How different centers reflect the ideals and values of the groups that support them {Diversity among programs).
