- W2015087335 abstract "Variable-span pair-order analysis, a new and fairly straightforward procedure for the study of sequence patterns, is illustrated by its successful application to beef pancreatic ribonuclease. Given a pair of dissimilar residues A and B that occur at least once at each of two selected separations (spans), e.g. I-2 and I-4, the basic analysis consists in comparing the mutual chain orientation (“same” or “opposite”) of two residue-pair occurrences of unequal length. The data for all such cross-matches for pairs of dissimilar residues are pooled. Several combinations of two distinct spans give statistically significant correlations. Some refinements and extensions of the analysis are described, and some predictions about the sequence are verified. Preliminary steps are taken toward reconstruction of the sequence. The results, which confirm, extend, and supplement previous observations, validate the pair-order concept once more and establish the architectural significance of certain individual spans, combinations of two spans, and local associations of residues and residue groups. A relation between sequence patterns and the conformation of the chain seems clearly indicated. The possibilities for theoretical interpretation are discussed, with major stress on considerations stemming from structural chemistry." @default.
