- W2015133309 abstract "Abstract The ontogeny of responsiveness to repetitive visual stimulation between 32 weeks of conception and 2 years of life was studied in 135 subjects. The effects of flickering light on the EEG was minimal at birth, but it improved conspicuously during waking between 2 and 5 months of age. In the early half of this period the responsiveness to higher and higher flash rates increased abruptly: at the end of this period, significantly longer runs of “driven” rhythm were observed during stimulation, the amplitude of “driven” waves became higher and the interference of photic driving with the waves of the resting EEG began to decline. The sudden increase in number of exogenous fibres and dendritic branching in the cortex, with the subsequent increase in quantity of synaptic connections, in this period, shown by some authors, might be associated with the prominent improvement of photic driving during months 2–5. In sleep, responsiveness in the visual system became better during the last half of the first year after birth. We consider the high intensity of photic stimulation to be the most important factor underlying the relatively marked responsiveness to flicker in the first 2 years of life, compared with the findings of other workers." @default.
