- W2015243555 abstract "This report is concerned with the delays in fixating upon a visual stimulus which follows closely upon one preceding. Welford (1959) recently summarized and evaluated the theories that have been advanced on the general problem of increased delays in responding to the second of two sensory stimuli. None of the theories fits all the known facts. Nonetheless from one of the more tenable theories a speculative model can be set up as a framework for considering che latency data of this experiment. The model is constructed with the view that there is in the central mechanisms, interposed between the sensory reception of the stimulus and the execution of the movement of fixation, a single channel that can organize but one response at a time. This hypothetical model is borrowed directly from the writings of many investigators, among whom should be mentioned especially Vince (1948), Davis (1957, 1959), and Welford (1959). As will be apparent later, the model has serious shortcomings in describing the data of this experiment, the most obvious being that in some circumstances the movements to the first stimulus often can be modified or prevented by reception of a second stimulus if the interval between the two is short. This phenomenon was one of the three pointed out by Welford in his discussion of the hypothesis of the single-channel mechanism and referred to as the problem of grouping." @default.
